According to a report from The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman and Zac Jackson, the University of Akron “has some interest” in filling its head coaching vacancy with Ohio State offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson.
Wilson spent six years as the head coach at Indiana before joining Ohio State as offensive coordinator in 2017.
At Indiana, Wilson compiled a 26-47 record, building the Hoosiers a bit each year before leaving due to “philosophical differences” after the 2016 season.
Urban Meyer hired Wilson after the Buckeyes were shutout by Clemson in the 2016 College Football Playoffs. Wilson arrived in Columbus at the same time as Ryan Day, who Meyer hired to coach the quarterbacks.
Together, the two of them have helped produce the top scoring offense in the Big Ten in each of Wilson’s five seasons in Columbus.
The Buckeyes have also led the Big Ten in total offense every year since Wilson’s arrival. Three times they have led the B1G in rushing. The two times they didn’t (2018, 2021), they led it in passing.
Wilson has said in the past that he would like to be a head coach again if the right opportunity came along.
Is Akron that right opportunity? That will be up to Wilson to decide should the job be offered to him.
The Zips have won just three games over the last three years, including a 59-7 loss to Ohio State this season.
