The men’s basketball game scheduled for Thursday evening in Columbus between Iowa and Ohio State has been postponed due to inclement weather.

The Hawkeyes were supposed to travel to Columbus on Wednesday but they reportedly had mechanical issues with the plane and never left Iowa City. Wednesday’s issues in Iowa — combined with the major ice and snow storm scheduled to hit the Midwest overnight and throughout Thursday — had already put the game in doubt yesterday.

Columbus was hit with ice overnight and up to of a foot of snow is scheduled once the temperatures drop low enough for the rain to give way. These will not be ideal conditions to fly into or out of, making the difficult decision to postpone the game quite a bit easier.

The two teams will work together with the Big Ten to get the game rescheduled.

Tony, is there any chance of playing this game tomorrow night? Otherwise, there is no chance of making up this game, and the Nebraska game for that matter, unless one of the teams is willing to play a back to back.

Ohio State has now had 5 cancellations and is getting dangerously close to the 25 game minimum for NCAA Tournament qualification (we are currently set to play at least 28 games, but with Covid and winter weather who knows).

The way Ohio is looking today, I don’t see any traveling happening today. And tomorrow the snow will stop, but the ice and snow is still going to have all schools canceled. The earlier they arrive, the better. But the earlier they arrive, the worse the conditions. It doesn’t sound like tomorrow is an option just based on the fact that nothing has been said about tomorrow being an option.

Got it. Has there been any indication from OSU of contingency plans if they inch closer to the 25 game threshold? Right now we are at 27 regular season games with at least one game in the B1G Tournament.

Wouldn’t be surprised if they try to buy another game against a local outfit but have not been told that.

If they play 2/21 that means Nebraska has a back to back. They play 2/22 at Northwestern.

Only way either of these games get made up is a team agrees to play a back to back. Which is why I doubt they get made up.

It may require an additional team moving a game, hence “we will work with the Big Ten to try to reschedule.”
