PISCATAWAY, NJ – Ohio State head coach Ryan Day spoke with reporters following Ohio State’s 52-13 win at Rutgers. Day discussed quarterback CJ Stroud and his outstanding performance and also answered questions about his defense. All of the highlights of what Day had to say can be found below.
The week off really helped him rest and feel better. He’s blessed to be in this position.
The whole week he had good practices. He felt good all week with his shoulder. He didn’t feel right at all the Tulsa week.
It helped him to take a week off and step back and notice what he is doing and where he is right now. “I feel like God called me to be great.”
He’s blessed to have this opportunity. “The real people know what I can do.” He doesn’t care what anybody else says outside of the program.
The quarterbacks are a brotherhood. It doesn’t matter who is playing, they are all supportive. “We all love each other.” “We’re not just some logo where people say we’re a brotherhood.” They joke around, they eat together.
Every throw was okay, but he wants some back. Every throw he made was somewhere it could be completed. This is just the beginning.
“I feel about my team like I’ve always felt. It doesn’t matter what anybody else sees. That’s how it was before I was here. It’s Ohio against the world.” There are a lot of weird, funky things going on around college football right now. They’ll come out of this wherever they need to be.
CJ Stroud played well. He made a bad read on a near interception but bounced back with a touchdown pass on the next play.
Stroud showed toughness in this game, saving a loose ball, running the ball, etc.
This is a much different team than a month ago “but we hadn’t shown it yet.”
This was the first time this year the Buckeyes looked like an Ohio State team should look. But when you look at all of the contributors on this team, this was all new for them, but they’re not new anymore. They know what to expect from players now and they can create roles for players now.
It’s good to get two Big Ten wins on the road.
The defense is now a bunch of guys who are expecting to make plays. Earlier in the season they were just trying to get lined up. The pick by Denzel Burke was great.
Parker Fleming had a great week of work with the team’s preparation, as evidenced by Cam Martinez’s stop on the punt fake.
The CJ Stroud people saw today is what Day has seen in practice. He still has some things to clean up. Teams are going to try to attack him in different ways because he’s got a lot of film out there now.
Mitch Rossi deserves everything he’s getting. He does everything they ask. “I’m glad we have him.” It was good to see the tight ends so involved today.
TreVeyon Henderson has a different skillset than the other running backs. He’s a home-run hitter. It was Day’s decision to hold him out in the second half. He was ready to go.
It was the most comfortable CJ Stroud has looked. He didn’t get rattled. His receivers helped him out too.
Very good preparation this week from Stroud. He gained some perspective in his week off as a QB.
Gene Smith told him he needs to be patient with this team. They know they are doing the right things, but there are times you have to go through some growing pains. You just have to continue to get better. They have some juice right now. They didn’t panic. “And now we might have a good team.
