Buckeyes land five-star Sonny Styles

Ohio State has landed arguably its top target in the 2023 recruiting class. On Saturday afternoon, Pickerington (Ohio) Central linebacker/athlete Alex ‘Sonny’ Styles committed to the Buckeyes over Notre Dame, and others, giving Ohio State a five-star defender in the junior class.

The Ohio State legacy prospect is the son of former Buckeye great Lorenzo Styles. However, his older brother, Lorenzo Jr. is a freshman wide receiver at Notre Dame, causing many to wonder if he would follow in his brother’s footsteps instead and head to South Bend.

That question was answered on Saturday. Ohio State’s recruitment of the younger Styles has been a full staff effort. Head coach Ryan Day became personally involved in this process very early on along with the entire defensive staff. Over the summer, Styles worked out with Kerry Coombs and Matt Barnes in the secondary, with Al Washington at linebacker, and even spent some time working on the side with defensive line coach Larry Johnson.

While linebacker is probably the most likely future position for Styles, the Buckeyes have been recruiting him more as a defensive athlete who can line up at all three levels of the defense depending on the matchups.

Styles joins commitments from four-star tight end Ty Lockwood and four-star Ohio offensive lineman Joshua Padilla to give the Buckeyes a strong start to their 2023 recruiting class. With several other big targets expected to announce over the next couple of months, the Buckeyes could be off to another fast start on the recruiting trail.

Styles is the top prospect in Ohio’s 2023 class and a consensus five-star.
