Ohio State has a new offensive line coach.

Buckeye head coach Ryan Day has hired UCLA offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Justin Frye to replace Greg Studrawa, who was let go by Day on January 6.

Day has also named Frye associate head coach for the Ohio State offense.

“I am thrilled to welcome Justin, his wife, Lauren, and their family to Ohio State and the football program,” Day said. “Justin and I have worked on the same staffs together and I’ve seen first-hand how good he is at developing his players as well building personal connections with them. I believe he’ll do great things here to enhance his room and our offense as a whole.”

Following Ohio State’s 42-27 loss to Michigan, the writing was on the wall for Studrawa’s future in Columbus. The Buckeyes managed just 64 yards rushing on 30 attempts against the Wolverines, and the ballyhooed OSU offensive line gave up four sacks to UM pass rushers Aidan Hutchinson (3) and David Ojabo (1).

Frye has previous experience working with Day, as the two were on the same staff at Temple in 2012 and then Boston College in 2013 and 2014. Day was the offensive coordinator and receivers coach for Temple head coach Steve Addazio. Frye was the offensive line coach.

In 2013, Addazio left Temple for Boston College. Frye again coached the offensive line, but Day was moved to quarterbacks coach.

After the 2014 season, Day left Boston College to be the quarterbacks coach for Chip Kelly, who took the Philadelphia Eagles job in the NFL. Day spent two years with Kelly before then-OSU head coach Urban Meyer hired him to replace quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator Tim Beck. Kelly then eventually hired Frye away from Boston College in 2018 when he took over the UCLA program.

In Frye’s first season at UCLA, the Bruins’ rushing average went from 113.4 yards per game the previous year to 154.8 yards per game in 2018. In 2020, that number was up to 230.6 yards rushing per game.

Frye was also named offensive coordinator at UCLA following the 2018 season.

Frye is originally from Indiana and was a four-year starter at offensive tackle for the Hoosiers from 2003-2006.

Buckeye Scoop will have more on this situation in the coming days.
