COCOA, Fla. – We caught up with Ohio State commitment Cedrick Hawkins as part of our annual Southern Swing after his practice at Cocoa high school and everything is going well for the future Ohio State safety.
The ‘newness’ of being a commit is starting to wear off and Hawkins now is focusing on his spring practice work as he has one more year at Cocoa before it will be time to head to Columbus and join the Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes know that they will be getting a versatile player with Hawkins, someone who will be able to line up at one of many spots in Jim Knowles’ new defense for the Buckeyes.
“One thing about me is that I can play anywhere,” Hawkins said. “I can play strong safety, I can play high safety, I can play slot safety. Really, I can play anywhere. Wherever I can play at (first) I will be there.”
Hawkins had a chance to check out a preview of what things might look like when he was on campus for Ohio State’s spring game and even though the conditions were not ideal as far as temperature, the cool weather did nothing to cool his excitement over what the future holds.
“It was great,” Hawkins said. “It was kind of cold, but I am used to it, it gets cold here too. The atmosphere was amazing. It was nice to see the former players (show up) And I loved the (tribute) they did for Dwayne Haskins, that was great.”
The Buckeyes did not have a defensive back drafted in the recent NFL Draft, the first time since the 2013 NFL Draft, but Ohio State did have a pair of first-round NFL receivers go. The receiver legacy has only been growing with the Buckeyes and that is the position group that Hawkins will be going up against when he puts on the Ohio State uniform for the first time.
Is that something that he has given much thought to?
“I didn’t really think about it a lot but having the best wide receiver room in college football is great,” Hawkins said. “They make you better every single day and push you to be the greatest.”
