    Ohio State’s top-ranked recruiting class suffered a decommitment on Wednesday evening as Cincinnati (Ohio) La Salle cornerback prospect Devonta Smith opened up his recruiting process.


    The three-star prospect had committed to Ohio State back in March, a situation that moved very quickly after picking up his offer from Kerry Coombs and the Buckeyes. 

    But as sometimes happens in recruiting, things were re-evaluated in recent weeks and Smith and the Buckeyes will go their separate ways. 

    Smith’s departure drops Ohio State to 18 commitments in the class of 2021. Ohio State’s class remains at the top of the recruiting rankings. 

    While it is a near certainty that Ohio State will add one or two more defensive backs in this class, nothing imminent is expected in terms of replacing Smith’s spot in the class. 

    The Buckeyes continue to pursue Clemson commit Jordan Hancock at cornerback and Monroeville (PA) Gateway star Derrick Davis Jr. at safety and are expected to continue to evaluate...
