The Ohio State University has announced the 2020 Athletics Hall of Fame Class, which is headlined by former head football coach Francis Schmidt (1934-1940), who started the famous “Gold Pants” tradition honoring the football team for a win over the rival Michigan Wolverines.
During his first season, Schmidt was asked about the rivalry with the Wolverines and the Buckeyes’ chances of beating them, to which he replied, “Those fellows put their pants on one leg at a time, the same as everyone else.”
The Buckeyes beat Michigan 34-0 that year. Then responded with three more shutouts of the Maize and Blue over the next three seasons.
Since that win in 1934, every time Ohio State beats Michigan in football, the OSU players all receive a gold pants charm.
Schmidt lasted seven seasons at Ohio State, finishing with a 39-16 record with the Buckeyes. In total, Schmidt went 156-58-11 as a head coach and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1971.
