It may be hard to believe that Ohio State is five games removed from the last time that Michigan State pulled off an upset against the Buckeyes. There was a stretch of time where it felt that the Spartans were always standing between the Buckeyes and a special season.
This year the Spartans find themselves in the top-10, along with Ohio State and despite what the current odds may try to tell you, Mel Tucker’s team does stand in the way once again.
Sure, Michigan State has only beat Ohio State three times in the 2000s, but the losses in 2015 and in 2013 both knocked the Buckeyes off their postseason tracks.
Since then, the Buckeyes have seen better times, four of the five games determined by 20 or more points, only a 2016 game decided by a single point. The Buckeyes have remained a top team during that stretch of games, but the Spartans have not with 2017 the only season that MSU won double-digit games (7-2, 10-3) and coming off a 2-5 2020 season.
