Could Relationships Be Key In Landing Caleb Downs?

HOSCHTON, Ga. – There are some big targets still on Ohio State’s recruiting board and safety recruiting will be very important for the 2023 cycle. The Buckeyes already have a pair in the fold but Caleb Downs out of the greater-Atlanta area is about as big of a name as anyone nationally, a priority target for sure.

The 6-foot, 185-pound five-star can pretty much name where he wants to go to school with all the major offers, Ohio State included. One thing is for certain, he is going to take some time off in May when it comes to recruiting to work on spring football and getting better going into his senior season.

“That is very nice,” Downs said. “To be able to chill out in May and hit it back in June for officials. For May I will just be doing school workouts and spring ball.”

And then recruiting starts back up and June official visits. Two are known now and more are going to be coming soon.

“I have two set right now with UGA and Alabama,” Downs added. “There will be another two dropping soon, that will be later in the week.”

Downs did not want to tip his hand so we will all have to wait to see who else makes the cut, but it would be a shock if the Buckeyes did not earn one of those visits, especially with Downs coming off of an Ohio State unofficial just a month ago.

What did he get to see during Ohio State’s spring practice?

“I definitely saw some great defense being played, a variety of coverages and disguises that go into it,” Downs said. “That is a great for a defense because you get to play with the offense and play aggressive on defense.”

Jim Knowles is bringing a new energy to the Ohio State defense and the tandem of defensive back coaches of Perry Eliano and Tim Walton may be giving the Buckeyes a better chance than many expect.

“Coach Eliano is a great person, great mentor,” Downs said. “Always got some piece to learn, do whatever he says. Coach Walton is a family friend of mine, my dad has known him for a long time. He was a coach in the league, so he knows how to develop guys in the league.”

Time will tell if those relationships win out, but recruiting is a relationship business and Ohio State is in good shape there.
