COLUMBUS, Ga. – Southern Swing is in the home stretch, and we stop in Columbus, not the one everyone is familiar with in Ohio, but rather the one in the Peach State to check out defensive lineman Darron Reed from Carver high school.
Reed checks in at 6-foot-5, 260 pounds but may be even closer to 270 pounds at this point and looks the part, a college-ready look is there for some lucky strength and conditioning coach to make some tweaks with and get out on to the field.
The recruitment of this four-star has been a joint effort for the Buckeyes by position coach Larry Johnson along with corners coach Tim Walton, someone who knows Columbus (Ga.) and Carver high school well, as someone who spent time at both in their younger years.
“It helps a lot, knowing he came from Carver, went to Columbus (Ohio) and to Ohio State to play,” Reed said. “It just says a lot about it.”
Reed is not looking to waste a lot of time with his recruitment with a July 4th decision date on tap but don’t mistake a defined finish line with not taking this seriously as June will be a busy month for Reed with official visits scheduled, Buckeyes included.
“I will be at Clemson the 3rd through the 5th, then I will be headed to LSU the 10th through the 12th,” Reed said. “Then Miami (Fla.), I will be there the 17th through the 19th and then Ohio State the 24th through the 26th.”
That final weekend in June is shaping up to be a monster visit weekend for the Buckeyes and Ohio State’s visit weekend will have a definite Southern flair to it as many of the top prospects from the state of Georgia will be part of it. Everyone has to come to their own decision but the familiarity of having some guys “from home” at the next level is not the worst thing in the world.
“(I am close with) Vic Burley and Caleb Downs,” Reed said. “(Not from Ohio, close with) Sonny Styles, I have talked with him a couple of times before. It does make things more comfortable but if you want to go somewhere and play you go somewhere and play.”
Check out what else Reed had to say in this exclusive Southern Swing interview as we are in the final days of the 2022 trip. You can only get it here at BuckeyeScoop, don’t miss out.
