FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — Despite the distance, Ohio State has had its fair share of success at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Buckeyes pulled both quarterback Tate Martell and defensive tackle Haskell Garrett out of the west coast powerhouse in 2017. Now five years after signing those two studs, Ohio State is looking to land another star out of Bishop Gorman in four-star safety Zion Branch.

Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 205 pounds, Branch is a physical specimen who can do a little bit of everything in the defensive backfield. Towards the end of last month, Buckeye Scoop was able to get eyes on Branch at the Battle 7v7 tournament in Miami. Needless to say, we came away thoroughly impressed. Seeing Branch move the way he did at his size showed that he could be a star safety at the next level.

One program in particular that views Branch that way is Ohio State and their defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs. In our conversation with Branch at the tournament, he talked about why he plays 7v7, his recruitment, and Ohio State.

“Coach Coombs and Coach Barnes have really been making a big push really,” Branch told Buckeye Scoop. “You know, telling me where I fit in their system and Coach Coombs is telling me I’ll play in pretty much every spot. And they are showing me I’ll be a versatile player, so that’s a really good thing.”
