COLUMBUS – Everything makes news around the Ohio State football program, even the turf.

We now have official word on what Ohio State’s brand-new surface will look like for the 2022 season as the university has released an artist’s rendering and details.

In 2021, many fans were concerned about a fading of the old surface that looked less scarlet and more pink on television and it was learned at that point that the lifecycle for the artificial surface is about eight years and that current rug was installed in 2014.

A little quick math at that point showed that a new surface was in order at Ohio Stadium, a historical venue that still looks pretty good for being 100 years old as Ohio State enters its 133rd season of playing football.

More than 1,300 designs were submitted by fans on what they would like to see on the new surface, something that should be in place for eight seasons. The designs were looked through and narrowed down and an internal department panel made the final decision.

Some of the notable changes to the field will include:

*  The Block O at midfield has been emphasized with the outer stroke color adjusted to gray;

*  Buckeye leaf decals replace the two X’s at the respective 35 yard line kickoff locations;

*  Official OHIO STATE and BUCKEYES athletics word marks, consistent with those on other venue playing surfaces and on team uniforms and apparel, are in the two scarlet end zones;

*  The outer boundaries of play have been color adjusted to gray to complement the scarlet end zones;

*  Yard line numbering matches the block type font on the players’ uniforms; and

*  The iconic black/white/scarlet striping pattern, found most prominently on Buckeye helmets, will have a home in each end zone along the end lines, matching the width of the goal posts.

The new surface will be installed in the months of June and July at Ohio Stadium. The WHAC will also be getting the same treatment as it will receive an identical surface for the indoor field with that timeline starting as soon as April of 2022.

Fans will get their first opportunity to see the Buckeyes host a football game on its new surface on September 3rd when Ohio State opens the season against Notre Dame to kick off the 2022 football season.
