Nigel Smith Always Wants To Compete

COLUMBUS – Class of 2024 defensive lineman Nigel Smith has seen the Ohio State campus before but Monday gave him a different perspective to work in a camp with Larry Johnson and the Buckeyes coaches.

The 6-foot-5, 260-pound four-star already holds and Ohio State offer along with many other major opportunities with more than two-dozen and counting. A lot of times a player earns an offer and then doesn’t want to do anything to derail that progress and not camp, but that is not what Smith is all about as he has seen that move by players in the past.

“I don’t understand why some guys think that camping is for no reason,” Smith said. “There is no reason not to come out here and get better, all you can do is learn. His knowledge is so deep, you are not going to come here and not learn anything. I am going to camps to get better and have fun.”

Nobody is quite sure how much longer Larry Johnson may be coaching but for now he is one of the best in the game and makes an impression on all of the recruits with a track record that few can even approach.

“It was definitely a great time, to be able to see his coaching style in action, I really enjoyed it,” Smith said. “You got a lot of drills that you can take back. It was great to see his coaching style in person and get coached by someone like that.”

Where do the Buckeyes see Smith fitting in, if he were to pick Ohio State at some point?

“He explained to me he sees me as an edge,” Smith said. “But he wants his best pass rusher on the field, so he wants me rushing from the three, he just wants me on the field, so I was just doing everything.”
