Ohio State and Alabama Set Home and Home for 2027, 2028

Ohio State announced on Thursday that a home-and-home series has been scheduled with Alabama.

The two teams will play in Columbus in 2027 and in Tuscaloosa in 2028.

“We’d like to thank University of Alabama Director of Athletics Greg Byrne and Senior Deputy Director of Athletics Finus Gaston, who worked so hard with us to get this series scheduled,” Diana Sabau, Ohio State Deputy Director of Athletics, said.

“Building a non-conference schedule with tradition-rich programs is important to the competitive excellence of our program and the department, and it is great for our fans. We are excited for both schools and pleased to be able to share in this announcement today with the University of Alabama.”

The two teams have met just four times in history, and never once on campus.

Alabama leads the series 3-1, but the Buckeyes have the most recent victory.

Here’s how the series has gone.

§  At the 1978 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, Bear Bryant’s Crimson Tide defeated the last of Woody Hayes’ 13 Big Ten championship squads, 35-6;

§  Alabama defeated Ohio State, 16-10, at the New Jersey Meadowlands in the 1986 Kickoff Classic;

§  Alabama won the 1995 Florida Citrus Bowl game in Orlando, 24-17; and

§  Ohio State won a CFP semifinal game in New Orleans, 42-35, to advance to the CFP title game, a 42-20 victory over Oregon at AT&T Stadium in North Texas.

Based on the state of the two programs, it would not be a terrible surprise if they meet in the postseason before the two teams hit the turf at Ohio Stadium in 2027.

Ohio State has scheduled SEC opponents in the recent past, but games against Georgia, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt have fallen through for various reasons.

The series with Georgia was supposed to begin this year, but Ohio State canceled when the Big Ten and Pac 12 agreed to begin an annual scheduling series a few years back. The Pac 12 eventually canceled that series, though the Buckeyes have still ended up with Oregon and Washington on their future (and present) schedules.

Assuming these games happen, it will be the first regular season SEC opponent for the Buckeyes since they had a home-and-home with LSU in 1987 and 1988.

Ohio State’s upcoming slate of non-conference games is quite impressive, as they have scheduled home-and-homes with Oregon, Notre Dame, Washington, Texas, Georgia, and now Alabama all in the next decade plus.
