Ohio State freshmen Emeka Egbuka and Reid Carrico were the latest true freshmen to have their black stripes removed following practice late Tuesday morning. The removal of the black stripe from the helmet signifies a player’s move from an unproven rookie to a full-fledged member of the Buckeye football team.

Egbuka is a former 5-star wide receiver out of Washington who was the No. 1 prospect at his position in the 2021 recruiting class. He has been working in the slot this spring and has clearly been effective.

Carrico was one of the top inside linebacker recruits in the 2021 class. An Ironton, Ohio native, Carrico had an interception during Monday’s practice while the media was on hand.

Egbuka and Carrico are the fourth and fifth true freshmen to have their black stripes removed this spring. They join receiver Marvin Harrison, defensive end Jack Sawyer, and running back TreVeyon Henderson.

Losing a black stripe in the spring is a pretty rare thing, as it had only happened four times prior to this year. The first ever was receiver Austin Mack in 2016, followed by nose tackle Tommy Togiai in 2018, and then receiver Garrett Wilson and defensive end Zach Harrison in 2019.

Based on the history, these five freshmen would seem to be among pretty good company.

  1. Urban Meyer only had two freshmen lose black stripes in the spring

    Austin Mack ’16
    Tommy Togiai ’18

Ryan Day has had seven so far.

    Zach Harrison ’19
    Garrett Wilson ’19
    Marvin Harrison ’21
    Jack Sawyer ’21
    TreVeyon Henderson ’21
    Reid Carrico ’21
    Emeka Egbuka ’21

And that was without a spring last year. So the question — why is Day so soft on his freshmen?

For comparison sake here is list of players who have enrolled early under Urban and now Day:
    Urban
2012-Michael Thomas, Cardale Jones, Joshua Perry, Brionte Dunn, Jacoby Boren, Tyvis Powell
2013-Eli Apple, Cam Burrows, J.T. Barrett, Tyquan Lewis, Tracy Sprinkle
2014-Raekwon McMillan, Curtis Samuel, Johnnie Dixon, Kyle Trout, Marcelys Jones, Stephen Collier, Sean Nuernberger
2015- Jashon Cornell, Nick Conner, Grant Schmidt, Jamel Dean
2016-Jonathon Cooper, Austin Mack, Michael Jordan, Tyler Gerald, Antonio Williams, Malik Barrow, Tuf Borland
2017-Okudah, Wade, Dobbins, Martell, Isaiah Pryor, Browning, Myers, Williamson and Brendon White.
2018-Matthew Baldwin, Sevyn Banks, Dallas Gant, Tyreke Johnson,Matthew Jones, Master Teague, Tommy Togiai, Max Wray
    Day
2019-Garrett Wilson, Zach Harrison, Marcus Crowley, Ronnie Hickman, Ryan Jacoby, Noah Potter (Justin Fields)
2020-no spring but there were 14 early enrollees including Fleming, JSN, Paris Johnson, Stroud who were top 4 players in class
2021-has 15 total including Sawyer, Egbuka, Henderson, Mccord etc
Quantity and Quality have both gone way up in terms of early enrollees under Day which is probably why we see more now under Day losing black stripe in spring.
