LOS ANGELES – Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham held their final press conference on Friday as the Rose Bowl looms just one day away. Both coaches answered questions about their respective squads and how they will fare against each other on Saturday. The highlights of everything that was asked can be found below.

Ryan Day

  • It’s been a wonderful week so far in Los Angeles. They appreciate having the Ohio weather in California for practice this week. This month has been a great opportunity for the young guys to build momentum for next year.
  • He is comfortable with the roster size of his team currently in Los Angeles. There are great opportunities to play for some young guys who will be back next year.
  • Is there a chip on OSU’s shoulder concerning the questions of their toughness? “We’ll find out.” The practices have been physical and spirited “but the ultimate test will be on Saturday.”
  • He’s not expecting Chris Olave to change his mind about opting out of the game. But he has stuck around because he wanted to stay around the team.
  • Asked about Sevyn Banks, Antwuan Jackson, Cody Simon, and Marcus Williamson being absent, Day said there are some game-time decisions coming and they will cover that in the availability report.
  • It’s time for the young Buckeye receivers to step up.
  • Utah is very similar to several Big Ten teams. They play a lot of TEs and are physical.
  • Asked about Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s preparation for this game, Day said he hasn’t tried to do too much because you don’t want to change what you are.
  • The challenge has been set forth to win the game up front. They are down some interior defenders but they have plenty of guys they can play instead.
  • It is very, very important for the players to win this game to show the pride the players have in themselves and the program.
  • He’s not sure what the crowd situation will be like but they are planning for everything. He’s heard about the ticket situations and Utah having more fans at the game.
  • It will be fun to see where things go from here for CJ Stroud. He keeps growing each week.
  • They have had Cade Stover at linebacker trying to help out. They feel better about the LB depth now. Stover is excited and fired up about it.
  • They are making a point to enjoy the Rose Bowl throughout their preparation. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. The guys work so hard that they should be able to enjoy these rewards.

Kyle Whittingham

  • “We’re elated to be here.” It’s been a great week. “We’ve been working a long time to get here. It’s been a long, hard journey.”
  • “We’re excited about the opportunity to play Ohio State. It’s a program steeped in tradition.”
  • What concerns him most about Ohio State? “Everything.” Explosive offense. Quarterback leads the nation in QBR, which he believes is the most accurate measure of a quarterback.
  • The players understand the importance of the Rose Bowl. They have talked about the tradition.
  • Getting to this point where Utah could play in the Rose Bowl was mostly about a steady improvement in recruiting over the years.
  • The change in quarterback early in the season provided an immediate spark but also a spark that lasted all season long.
  • Knocking wood, no COVID issues with the team.
