Sonny Styles In For ’22 After Reclassification

There had been whispers that Pickerington (Ohio) Central defensive star and Ohio State commit Sonny Styles might take his talents to Ohio State sooner rather than later and on Wednesday the news that we had talked about before privately became public as news broke. Styles will be singing next week and will become a member of the class of 2022 for Ohio State.

Styles committed to Ohio State over Notre Dame a little less than a month ago as the Buckeyes were able to land the local star. Styles’ father Lorenzo played at Ohio State but Sonny also has an older brother who went to Notre Dame, making both schools legacies to a certain extent.

Styles was the No. 6 recruit in the nation according to the 247Sports composite rankings but now will factor into the 2022 rankings with his move from 2023 to 2022.

Obviously there are concerns from some fans after Ohio State’s last football reclassification did not work out quite as well with Quinn Ewers moving from the class of 2022 to the class of 2021. Ewers barely had time to get his mail forwarded before he decided that Ohio State was not the place for him and announced he was entering the transfer portal at the conclusion of the 2021 season.

It will be different for Styles, someone who has grown up in the shadow of Ohio Stadium and will have months rather than weeks to get ready to make the transition from high school to college. And it is a short trip East on Interstate-70 if he gets homesick for Pickerington.

The Buckeyes will sign most/all of its 2022 class during the early National Signing Day that is set for December 15th. Adding Styles to the class of 2022 gives the Buckeyes 18 commits at this point with a few players still set to make decisions.

It is unknown exactly what position Styles will play with the Buckeyes as a player who could really play on all three levels but one thing that we do know is that Styles will have a new defensive coordinator as it was announced on Tuesday evening that the Buckeyes have signed a deal with former Oklahoma State DC Jim Knowles. The new DC will not join the team until January 2nd, well in advance of Styles’ arrivals to the Buckeyes later in the year.

Time to ditch this "Bullet" BS and allow him to play at Safety after missing out on two elite prospects in Branch and Nwankpa this cycle.
