Spring Practice Insider: Receivers Making Position Moves

The assembled Ohio State beat was permitted to watch 23 minutes of the Buckeyes’ seventh spring practice on Friday, and while there wasn’t a lot to see, it was still very good to be back on the sidelines of the indoor field to soak in the sights and sounds of what the kids are listening to these days.

The viewing window for reporters consisted of stretching and jogging (for the players), followed by some special teams and individual work. In our limited window, it was redshirt freshman CJ Stroud who took the first snaps in each individual drill, of the three that we saw for quarterbacks. He was followed by redshirt freshman Jack Miller and then true freshman Kyle McCord.

There weren’t any one-on-ones or first-team offensive line drills or first-team defensive line drills.

The biggest news of the day is that sophomore wide receiver Gee Scott has moved to tight end and sixth-year senior running back Demario McCall was at defensive back. A source indicated that McCall hasn’t looked totally out of place, as he had an interception in a practice earlier in the week at nickel.

Head coach Ryan Day said both players requested the move. Day said that Scott has hard to work hard to stay at 215 pounds, so this will make life a bit easier. It will also thin out the receiver room a bit and increase the depth and potential in an inexperienced tight end room.

Senior receiver Chris Olave didn’t practice today but it wasn’t anything serious. Day said there were some players out with some non-COVID illnesses.

Today’s practice featured a 50-play scrimmage to close out the practice session. There was full tackling and guys going to the ground. Day hopes to more of that in the next two weeks prior to the spring game.

We will have video later today and Tom Orr and I will also record an episode of the Buckeye Weekly Podcast later in the afternoon to recap the news of the day.
