Four-star defensive end Jason Moore has announced his verbal commitment to Ohio State.
Moore (6-6 255) is the No. 5 defensive lineman in the 247Sports Composite and the No. 53 player in the 2023 class overall. He attends DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland and is ranked the No. 1 player in the state.
The last time the Buckeyes landed a defensive end out of DeMatha Catholic was six years ago this month and his name was Chase Young.
Moore is ranked about 25 spots lower than Young was at the time of his commitment, but there is still an entire senior season to see if he can get into that same five-star stratosphere.
Moore took official visits to Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and Notre Dame this past June, and also held offers from Alabama, LSU, Florida, Oregon, USC, and a dozen other top programs.
Moore is the first defensive end commit in the 2023 class for the Buckeyes. He joins defensive tackle Will Smith, Jr. as the lone defensive linemen in the class so far for Ohio State.
The Buckeyes may not have to go far from Moore to land their second defensive end, as Upper Marlboro, Maryland prospect Desmond Umeozulu plays about 20 minutes away from DeMatha and is one of OSU’s top remaining targets. Umeozulu is the No. 14 edge defender in the 247Sports Composite and the No. 136 player overall. Together, Moore and Umeozulu may be the top two pass rushers in the entire state.
Ohio State will also continue to pursue five-star California defensive end Matayo Uiagalelei, who took his official visit to Columbus in June as well. Uiagalelei has also visited Oregon and USC officially.
Four-star defensive tackle John Walker (6-3 310) is scheduled to announce his commitment on July 28. He took official visits to Ohio State, Michigan, UCF, and Miami in June. The Buckeyes were his final visit.
Ohio State’s 2023 class now stands at 18 commitments.
