In recent months, Ohio State’s recruiting focus at wide receiver has primarily focused on five-star Washington standout Emeka Egbuka and South Florida four-star speedster Troy Stellato.
On Friday afternoon, Stellato committed to Clemson over the Buckeyes and many other programs, denying Ohio State of a third wide receiver pledge in the 2021 recruiting class.
Stellato had been on the radar for the Buckeyes for over a year and turned in an impressive performance at a one-day camp last summer. He then was offered back in the fall and was a priority target for the Ohio State offensive staff.
The Buckeyes and Tigers have both been finalists for many of the top wide receiver prospects this cycle, including guys like Stellato, Marvin Harrison Jr., Beaux Collins, and Emeka Egbuka.
Givler’s Thoughts:
This is a recruitment that had been a two-horse race for quite some time. At one point back in the fall and winter, things looked good for Ohio State but all of the recent momentum suggested this was coming for Clemson. The Buckeyes and Tigers continue to trade blows on the recruiting trail and have seemingly found themselves in several head-to-head battles this cycle.
The Buckeyes are still in great shape at wide receiver, however, with a pair of commitments from four-star prospects Jayden Ballard and Marvin Harrison Jr. The Buckeyes are still in excellent shape for Egbuka and with Orlando (Fla.) Edgewater slot receiver Christian Leary backing off his recent June 6th commitment date, that could help the Buckeyes find their way into the mix there as well.
